Hello,
I am working through the tutorial to provide me some refreshers, and I am uncertain how to do one of the steps for my particular case.
In section "Elevation Data" on page 14, the tutorial provides a method for assigning elevation data to the slices created in the 3d layer configorator.
My question are:
1. Can I assign elevations to one slice at a time instead of all slices as described in the tutorial?
2. Can I choose this slice to assign elevation data to during the linking process, or during the assignment? (Or do I have to create a slice field in my excel elevation data)
3. During the assignment of elevations to slices, how can I constrain the assignment to a specific footprint?
4. Is it possible to reopen the 3d layer configorator to add additional slices and rerun the meshing process, or do I have to restart all over from the 2d mesh and re-enter all my slices again?
Thanks for any help.

Hi,
I have recently been carrying out some excavation modelling and have a relatively simple supermesh. I understand that vertices might be causing my problems and I'm still exploring those issues.
I have recently tried to mesh using "Triangle" mesh generator. I am following some guidance documents provided by DHI in a training course offered a couple years back.
Issues:
-I left the generator running over night and it never finished.
-Generator quickly fills up all 32GB of my RAM
-Clicking on the "stop mesh operation" button does not stop the meshing operation. Even at the beginning when I still have memory available and my computer is still responsive.
-Advancing front and GridBuilder mesh generators will complete with their default settings. I haven't experimented with refinement yet.
Questions:
-What are the advantages of GridBuilder over Triangle (and vice versa)?
-For an open cast excavation scenario, would GridBuilder be suitable? What would be the potential problems when trying to run the model. I am using Triangle since that is the method chosen by DHI in the documentation they provided.
-Are there any detailed recomendations on the polygons used for creating supermesh (max / minimum angles, vertices separation, minimum spacing between "nested" or parallel polygon lines, etc.)?
Thanks,
Drake

Mr. Heermann,
I know this is an old question, but did this solution work for you?
I beleive I have come up with an alternative solution, but I am still working at meshing the polygons. Seems to be taking a bit too long. However, I got around the dropped polygons by splitting the main polygon in half so that it “cups” the island polygon from both sides.
