Hi,

What is the best way to add a series of new wells into a model with an existing mesh so that they are located on new nodes matching the well's 'true' coordinates? The mesh has already been used extensively in its current form, and has many complex boundary conditions and property distributions. Unfortunately it is far too coarse in the vicinity of the new well field we are about to add, so we need to find a way to adapt the current mesh.

One option could be to manually refine the mesh around images of the well locations on an imported map, then use the move node function + F2 to force the node to be equal to the exact well location. However, we would rather not move nodes as this will slightly alter the z-elevations within the adjacent elements.

Is there a way that I can import a well as a new node and force the program to refine the element in which it would be located? Or is there another way to do this?

We have FEFLOW 5.4 and 6.0

Thanks,

SB

In the Classic user interface (and in version 5.4) there is a way to automatically refine the mesh for a number of wells: Use an inverse distance interpolation with one neighbor to set the wells, do NOT choose the automatic import but the manual one, and then hit <F2>. Via Options - Well BC you can control the level of refinement in advance.

Hi Peter (and everyone who can help),

although this topic has been posted some time ago, I was wondering how adding new nodes to an existing mesh can be done in Feflow version 6.2 (p7)?

Thanks for your help!

The status is still the same: You can refine the mesh and manually move a node to a well location, but there's currently no automatic way of adding new nodes at a well location. We will very probably provide a way more general solution in the future, but it is still to early at this time to provide more details, not to speak of a time frame.

Thank you for your help Peter.

Has this functionality been added yet? I need to add wells to an existing FEFLOW 7 model.

If you want to work with 2D or 3D layered-based meshes, the feature you are looking for still does not exist. However, the feature is available if you are interested in going for partially- or fully-unstructured meshes. You can re-mesh your model domain or parts of the model domain and include Addins to constrain the mesh generator TetGen to locate mesh nodes on the locations you are interested in.
